“American Boy” Disappearing Act?
I bought Estelle’s “American Boy” single from the iTunes store on, no lie, February 19th. I have been listening to this jam since then, now ready to kill myself because the rest of the United States is just jumping on the bandwagon in August and thanks to you and your mom, it’s never going away. It may as well be “Closing Time” by that band whose name I forgot, yet whose song still wants to make me cause myself physical harm.
I have no idea why it took nearly seven months for everyone else to realize it was a hot track. (I also am convinced I’m in the wrong business and should have been in A&R, but we move on…) However, I am now beginning to think that the song may have some dangerous subliminal message properties embedded within it, because it was a top 10 track in the iTunes store last week, and now it (and the rest of the album it’s featured on) was removed from the US store, inexplicably. Clearly people are still searching for it, and buying it…no matter who’s singing it in a drunken karaoke-type way.
The “Studio All-Stars” bad cover band a la Kidz Bop (except less funny and more pathetic) version of “American Boy” (with faux Kanye West on the bridge) is sitting at #19 now as a result. 19!
One, that’s hysterical. Two, what the hell? Needless to say their cover of “Beautiful Liar” isn’t charting, and god bless America[n Boy] for that.
