You’re Welcome, America: a Final Night With George W. Bush
Finally watched Will Ferrell’s “You’re Welcome, America: a Final Night With George W. Bush” on HBO. Am I the only person who thinks it was way over-hyped?
I love Will as Dubya, but he’s never performed as him for this long a period of time — a one-act play. It’s always these succinct blips on SNL.
He goes into these monologues where he ends it by dropping the accent and just screaming as any other character he’s done. (Think: the two lovers skit when Rachel Dratch pisses him off and he starts barking at her.) He even rips himself off in “Taladega Nights” when he launches into a “baby Jesus” prayer. It’s almost verbatim.
And, yes, I realize it’s a one-act play with just him, but what the hell is with the really awkward transitions between scenes? Random secret service agent who probably gets paid Equity minimum to stand in one place all night and then bust into an impromptu dance. Couldn’t the sound designer have come up with anything else?
The Condi Rice scene is hysterical, though. Plus, Michael McDonald.
